Experience, particularly in manufacturing, engineering and operational leadership, is often seen as a cost rather than a competitive advantage. Yet the latest wave of innovation suggests the opposite may be true.

For years, discussions around innovation have focused on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and software development. The assumption has been that technological progress is limited by our ability to generate new ideas.
A recent Forbes article argues that the challenge has shifted. The bottleneck is no longer technological innovation itself, but the physical and mechanical systems required to turn innovation into scalable reality. According to the article, industries such as AI, autonomous systems, medical devices and advanced energy infrastructure are increasingly constrained by manufacturing capability, workforce readiness and the ability to scale production.
In other words, having the idea is becoming the easy part.
The difficult part is building the factories, production lines, supply chains and quality systems needed to commercialise those ideas at speed.
This should sound familiar to anyone working across chemicals, advanced materials, industrial manufacturing, life sciences or the energy transition.
Whether it is battery materials, critical minerals processing, sustainable chemistry, biotechnology or data centre infrastructure, the challenge is remarkably similar: demand is accelerating faster than the available capability needed to manufacture and deliver solutions.
The article highlights that production systems rely not only on equipment and capital investment, but on people who can programme, fabricate, inspect, qualify, document and scale increasingly complex products. It also references forecasts suggesting the U.S. manufacturing sector will require millions of additional workers in the coming decade, with a significant proportion of those positions at risk of remaining unfilled.
For employers, this creates an uncomfortable reality.
The market often celebrates breakthrough technologies and ambitious investment announcements, but less attention is paid to the experienced process engineer who can optimise a production line, the maintenance leader who improves reliability, the quality specialist who navigates regulatory complexity, or the operations director who scales a site safely and efficiently.
Yet these are frequently the individuals who determine whether innovation succeeds commercially.
As investment continues to flow into AI infrastructure, electrification, critical minerals, advanced materials and domestic manufacturing, the importance of practical engineering and manufacturing expertise will only increase.
The race to innovate is no longer purely digital. Increasingly, it is mechanical.
And perhaps that raises an important question for employers: if experienced technical and operational talent has become such a critical enabler of growth, are we truly valuing those people accordingly?
Innovation may begin with ideas, but it is experienced people who ultimately turn those ideas into products, processes and profitable businesses.
